Booster Account Security: How We Help Protect Your Account

Written by Savvy | June 29, 2026

Protecting your personal information and money has never been more important. Online scams, phishing attempts and account takeover attacks are becoming increasingly common, making strong account security an essential part of managing your finances online.

Booster Savvy is a New Zealand-based digital spending and savings account that uses multiple layers of protection to help keep your account secure. These include secure login controls, fraud monitoring and card management tools designed to help protect access to your account.

Two-factor authentication (2FA), a form of multi-factor authentication (MFA), adds an extra layer of identity verification when accessing your Booster account. Together with Booster's other security measures, it helps reduce the risk of unauthorised access and provides greater confidence when managing your money online.

What Is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a type of multi-factor authentication (MFA). While MFA can involve two or more verification methods, 2FA specifically uses two.

The first step is your password - something only you should know. The second step is an additional confirmation, such as using a code provided from your authenticator app. Both steps need to be completed before you can access your account.

Financial accounts often contain sensitive personal information and provide access to money, payments and savings. Additional authentication measures help reduce the risk of unauthorised access and are widely used across banking and financial services.

In practice, this extra step makes it much harder for someone else to access your account. Even if your password is guessed or stolen, they would still need access to the second verification step to sign in.

Why Online Account Security Matters

Online account security means the steps used to help protect your account, personal information and money when you manage your online account. It includes how you sign in, how your identity is checked, and the protections that help prevent someone else from accessing or changing your account without permission.

For a financial account, like Booster Savvy, strong online security matters because it’s not just access at risk - it’s your money and your personal information.

Stronger online account security reduces the chance of someone else being able to sign in or make changes, like resetting the password – which could lock you out of the account.

It also helps to protect people from phishing attempts and credential theft. Simple steps can make a big difference. Using a unique password and completing two‑factor authentication when prompted, all play an important role in secure online banking.

Why You Should Enable 2FA

2FA security is becoming a standard part of how you access secure online accounts - and for good reason. When you sign in, 2FA helps confirm it’s really you. Even if someone else has your password, they won’t be able to access your account without completing the second step.

This helps protect your balance, your personal details, settings, preferences and any changes made within your account. It also helps reduce the risk of fraud and unauthorised access, particularly in situations where login details may have been exposed elsewhere.

How to Turn On 2FA in the Booster NZ App

Before you start, make sure you have the latest version of the Booster NZ app. To check, go to the App Store or Google Play and search for “Booster NZ”. If “Update” is available, select it to update the app. If your app is already up to date, you’ll see “Open”.

Once the app is updated, here’s how to set up 2FA for your Booster Savvy login:

  • From the menu in the Booster NZ app, go to the Security screen and select 2-factor authentication
  • Select your preferred verification method – Auth0 Guardian or a compatible authenticator app
  • Follow the simple on-screen instructions
  • After the setup is completed, 2FA will become part of the way you sign in to both the Booster NZ app and mybooster.
  • If you have already turned on 2FA within mybooster, you won’t need to repeat the process - your existing setup will apply to the Booster NZ app too.

For detailed step-by-step instructions, see our guide on setting up 2FA.

How 2FA Works

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring two separate checks to confirm your identity before you can access your account.

Common forms of 2FA include authentication apps, one-time verification codes and device-based approval prompts. The method used can vary depending on the service and security requirements.

You’ll only be signed in once both steps are completed correctly. This helps verify that the person signing in is authorised to access the account, even if someone else knows your password.

How Booster Helps Protect Your Account

Booster uses a range of security measures designed to help protect your account, personal information and money.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security when signing in by requiring an additional verification step alongside your password.

Mastercard Identity Check (3D Secure) may be used for certain online card transactions to help verify it's you before a payment is processed.

Card controls within the Booster NZ app allow you to quickly lock your card if it is lost, misplaced or you notice unexpected activity.

Fraud monitoring and transaction monitoring processes help identify unusual account or payment activity and support efforts to keep customer accounts secure.

Together, these measures form part of Booster's broader approach to account security and secure online banking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Booster use 2FA?

We use 2FA as an extra layer of security to help ensure that we keep Booster accounts safe and better protected.

Does 2FA Apply to Every Debit Card Purchase?

2FA does not change your ability to use your digital or physical card to make in store or online purchases. Your money stays on tap, when you want it.

Two‑factor authentication is used when logging in to your account on the Booster NZ app, changing security settings or completing some other sensitive actions.

For in store purchased, PINs may be required to authorise the transaction. Contactless payments typically do not require a PIN for smaller amounts.

For online purchases, you may be asked to complete an additional identity check through Mastercard Identity Check (3D Secure). This adds another confirmation step to help verify the payment.

What is the difference between 2FA and MFA?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a type of multi-factor authentication (MFA). While MFA can involve two or more verification methods, 2FA specifically uses two.

Do I need 2FA every time I log in?

No, you don't need to use 2FA every time you log in. If you have biometrics or a PIN set up, this acts as your 2FA. You can also "remember your device" for up to 30 days. You will need to use 2FA if you log into a new device or log into mybooster.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Contact Booster support as soon as possible so we can help you regain access and secure your account. You can still use your physical or digital card to make purchases.

Can I use Booster without 2FA?

You can use your Savvy physical or digital card as normal, but two‑factor authentication is required for most actions in the Booster NZ app, such as seeing your Savvy transaction history and making payments.

We are here to help guide you through setting up 2FA for the Booster NZ app.

Can I turn off 2FA?

You can turn 2FA off, but you will have limited access to some functionality such as viewing transaction history, making transfers and changing account settings.

Is Booster Savvy secure?

Booster uses a range of security measures designed to help protect your account, personal information and money.

These include two-factor authentication (2FA) when signing in, Mastercard Identity Check (3D Secure) for some online card transactions, and card controls within the Booster NZ app that allow you to lock your card if needed.

Together, these measures provide additional layers of protection and help support a secure online banking experience.
